The Pope: war won by love, not by a superpower
Leo XIV in homily: 'God asks the Church for unity, overcome factionalism and fashions'
Key points
The Pope returned to pray for an end to wars. "With an ardent heart, we pray today that the Spirit of the Risen Lord will save us from the evil of war, which is won not by a superpower, but by the Omnipotence of love. Let us pray that he will deliver humanity from misery, which is redeemed not by an incalculable wealth, but by an inexhaustible gift. Let us pray him to heal us from the plague of sin, for the redemption announced to all peoples in the name of Jesus," he said in his homily at the Pentecost Mass.
Leo XIV: "Pentecost brings change"
"This peace," Leo XIV emphasised in his homily at the Pentecost Mass, "comes from forgiveness and leads us to forgiveness: it begins with the forgiveness given by Jesus Himself, who was betrayed, condemned, crucified by us. "The Lord pours out the Spirit of peace from one end of history to the other, because He who redeemed all from death excludes no one," the Pontiff added. Pentecost therefore brings a change: "On the one hand, we see it well, there are changes that do not renew the world, but age it amid errors and violence. On the other hand, on the other hand, the Holy Spirit enlightens minds and stirs new energies of life in hearts. It is in this way that he transfigures history - underlined Leo XIV - opening it to salvation, that is, to the gift that the one Lord shares with all. The Church's mission attests to this sharing, transforming the confusion of the world into communion with God and with each other'.
"God asks the Church for unity, overcome factionalism and fashions"
The mission entrusted by God to the Church, continued Leo XIV, requires "a unity founded on the love of God, the source of our love. The Spirit, who spoke through the prophets, always promotes unity in truth, because it arouses in us understanding, harmony and coherence of life". The sign, he explained referring to Pentecost, is "the gift of tongues that understand each other in the one faith. The Paraclete then defends us from everything that hinders this understanding: from facilities, from hypocrisies, from fashions that cloud the light of the Gospel. The truth that God gives us thus remains a liberating word for all peoples, a message that transforms every culture from within," he concluded.
