Riccardo Muti

Opening under the banner of the most aristocratic classicism for the Ravenna Festival: Riccardo Muti conducting his Cherubini compares the portals of Mozart's Concert No. 4 K218, with solo violinist Giuseppe Gibboni, and Beethoven's Settima. Two resplendent scores, mottled with ever-blooming rhythmic invention, stolen from the metres of ancient poetry. Apotheosis of dance Wagner called the Symphony, not by chance. The opening Coriolanus Overture immediately sets the course.

The Tallis Scholars

Peter Phillips was 20 years old when in 1973 he founded the Tallis Scholars in the lecture halls of Oxford University, destined to become one of the vocal groups with the most unmistakable identity, explorers of forgotten ancient repertoires confronted with writing

contemporary.

The anniversary of Palestrina, five hundred years after his birth, offers them the opportunity to measure themselves against the Missa brevis, which, together with other pages of the Prince of polyphony, is reflected in the present of Arvo Pärt, aged 90.

Heiner Goebbels

Reading the city as if it were a text in symphonic form: this is how the seventy-three year old German composer Heiner Goebbels imagined one of the most performed theatrical works, Surrogate Cities: dated 1994, when it was first performed in Frankfurt, and then successfully replicated throughout the world, in the production specifically for Ravenna Festival the artist reinvents its scenes and light design. Cherubini directed by Andrea Molino intertwines with the voices of Aurore Ugolin and John De Leo.

Vivaldi d'amore

The vast repertoire of Antonio Vivaldi is a treasure trove of continuous invention: when Stravinsky coined the boutade that the Venetian musician had always rewritten the same concerto, he gave it the impetus for rediscovery. Here, the viola d'amore, an instrument in which the favourite Anna Maria, among the 'putte' of the Ospedale della Pietà, excelled, takes centre stage. Alessandro Tampieri, soloist and director of the Accademia Bizantina, a historic ensemble from Ravenna, will measure himself against her.

Zubin Mehta

The Maestro and the maiden, Zubin Mehta and Abouzahra: together in dialogue on Beethoven's Concert in D major. He, 89 years old, a legend for life at the head of the Maggio Fiorentino Orchestra, she, 20 years old, born in Germany on Christmas Day 2005. Brought up in a family of musicians, the violin harnessed at the age of four, she is already a star in the new female firmament of the bow. The confidential nature of the programme is well complemented by the affectionate nature of Richard Strauss's Domestic Symphony.
