The mass landing of 'super hybrids'
Over 100 kilometres of electric range and peace of mind from the petrol tank? The solution comes from super hybrid cars, a new category of electrified cars that is growing rapidly on the market. Because while previously the definitions were 'limited' to mild hybrid, middle hybrid, full hybrid, plug-in hybrid and reev (Ev with extended range), since the beginning of the year the so-called super hybrids have been growing especially among Chinese brands. Before we get to know the most suitable models, a brief description of what this is all about: it is plug-in hybrid technology (i.e. with the possibility of also being refuelled via a power socket) with large-capacity batteries (around 20 kWh). It is precisely the super hybrids that could lead to a greater presence of Chinese brands among fleets, due to fringe benefits for highly electrified thermal cars that ensure low fuel consumption and emissions.
Among the upcoming super hybrids are not only SUVs but also station wagons like the Byd Seal 6 Dm-i also available with a saloon body. Equipped with Byd's Super Hybrid technology with Dm (Dual Mode), it integrates several innovations including dual high-speed electric motors with integrated controller, the Blade Battery and a 1.5-litre, 98 hp Xiaoyun petrol engine coupled with a 197 hp electric unit plus a 19 kWh battery that accepts up to 6.6 kW AC and 26 kW DC. The result is a propulsion system that functions most of the time as an EV, with up to 105 km of purely electric range and intelligent control brings efficiency for low consumption.
Similar sized batteries for the Omoda 7 phev, equipped with an 18.3 kWh battery pack that can be recharged, however, up to 40 kW. Again, the heat engine is a 1.5-litre 143 hp petrol engine combined with the 204 hp electric component. The Dht (Dedicated Hybrid Transmission) manages power flows between the three units, allowing smooth transitions between electric, hybrid and pure thermal modes. Super hybrid technology for the Jaecoo 8 (Chery group) debuting next year.
Geely's super hybrid powertrains are interesting: one system stands out, which will arrive on Volvo's XC70 super hybrid, in which the Chinese group is the main shareholder, expected next year with around 200 km in electric power.
