Cinema as a flywheel for the territory. With benefits for the sector on a local production scale, for employment, for the allied industries.

It is in this logic that the call for proposals 'Lombardia per il cinema a sostegno delle imprese di produzione audiovisiva e cinematografica' (Lombardy for the cinema in support of audiovisual and film production companies), promoted by the Region and of which the list of winners was published in the regional official gazette (number 19 of 10 May 2024) in recent weeks. They shared 3 million euro from ERDF funds 2021-27. Of these, EUR 2.4 million were made available for feature films and serial works, both fiction and animation. The other EUR 600,000 were earmarked for single and serial documentaries.

Cinema flywheel for the territory

The measure was therefore conceived with the precise intention of 'favouring the attraction of investments in Lombardy with benefits for the induced activities and employment. Facilitating the production of films, documentaries, and quality audiovisual products on our territory also means promoting, in concrete terms, the cultural, landscape, and natural heritage of Lombardy,' explained the regional councillor for Culture, Francesca Caruso. A total of 85 projects were submitted. Of these, 63 were found to be eligible and 19 eligible and fundable given the EUR 3 million endowment of the call.

These are audiovisual works that have in Lombardy the place of production or in any case the place where various scenes are shot. In the end, the eligible and fundable projects include 10 feature films and serial works of fiction and animation and 9 documentaries (of which 1 serial). The subsidy is granted and paid up to a maximum of 50% of the production costs incurred in Lombardy.

The list of winners

.

In the section on feature films and serial works of fiction and animation among the winners is EDI-Effetti Digitali Italiani, which requested it for the horror film "Beasts Of Prey" ("Ferine"), by Andrea Corsini. "With this film," reads the information section on the work, "director Andrea Corsini takes up his short film of the same name, 'Ferine' shot in Lombardy, which won several awards at international festivals. The feature film is equally entitled Ferine and takes up the universal themes and settings of the short film, declining them in a psychological drama with slight horror overtones'.

Entirely from Lombardy is the project that has Quantum marketing Italia as applicant for 'Ricomincio da Taaac' produced by QMI, Ramaya Productions and Medusa Film: the second film of 'Il Milanese Imbruttito' three years after 'Mollo tutto e apro un chiringuito'. The film has recently finished shooting. The last of the three Milan-based companies is Red Monk Studio, which will produce an animation series: 'The Canine Crusaders'.

Beneficiaries not only from Lombardy

.

Emma Film (Rome) was also awarded for "Le Bambine" ("Comedy that tells the story of three little girls - we read among the information on the work - who claim the right to enjoy their childhood, in a world populated by adults who do not want to take their responsibilities as parents"); Atlante Srl (Rome) for 'Rokia nel deserto' ('Animated film by director Enzo D'Alò - who in 1998 directed "La gabbianella e il gatto, ndr - this animated feature tells us in a simple, direct and innocent way, traditions, cultures, magic and legends of the mysterious African people of the Dogon'); Fandango (Rome) for "Facciamo tutti centro" ("Set in Milan and Sesto San Giovanni, it is a feature film between comedy and drama that tells the story of a dysfunctional family of teenagers united by a strong bond of friendship and love"); Indyca (Turin) for "Brianza" ("Film based on a news story. Documentaries

.

As for documentaries, eight of the nine winners are linked to production companies based in Milan. These include: La Casa delle Visioni for 'Una rosa è una rosa' ('A rose is a rose') ('The story of Rosa Genoni, a Lombard fashion designer of the early 20th century. The author and director is Alina Marazzi,' reads the information section on the work); Montmorency Film for 'Bestiaries, herbaria, lapidaries' ('The documentary is a reflection on the relationship between man and nature, a tribute to the unknown world, made up of animals, plants and stones, to rediscover the common roots in the culture, science and historical memory of the Old Continent'); 3D Produzioni Srl for 'La battaglia di Pavia e altre storie. The only non-Lombardy company to receive funds, for the documentary line, is Vivo Film (Rome) for "Il movimento della pietà" ("Documentary centred on the history of the Pietà Rondanini, the work on which Michelangelo worked for over twenty years, until a few days before his death, leaving it unfinished").
