Mercedes GLA: the third generation makes its debut – here’s what it’s like. Electric or mild hybrid
The brand’s new compact SUV boasts larger dimensions, a revamped design, a digital interior and three electric variants with a range of up to 657 kilometres
Mercedes is revamping one of the most strategic models in its compact range with the new GLA, an SUV that has been given a facelift and introduces a fresh blend of design, digital innovation and enhanced comfort.
Previewed in Helsinki and making its official debut in Warsaw, the new generation will be launched on the Italian market in its electric variant between the end of this year and early 2027. Orders open tomorrow, with prices ranging from around €47,000 to €56,000 for the top-of-the-range GLA 350 4Matic electric. Hybrid powertrains featuring 48-volt technology are also expected to arrive over the course of next year.
The car is based on the MMA platform of the recent Mercedes CLA, winner of the Car of the Year 2026 award. The new MMA architecture, originally designed for electric cars, is flexible enough to be adapted for hybrid petrol and diesel vehicles as well.
The new GLA has evolved in terms of its proportions and character, with a more dynamic and sporty design. The body is 20 millimetres lower, the wheelbase is 61 millimetres longer and the rear track is 31 millimetres wider. Measuring 4.57 metres in length, 1.87 metres in width and 1.60 metres in height, this compact SUV offers improved road presence and interior space whilst retaining the practicality required for everyday use, as demonstrated by the boot, which has increased by 70 litres to a capacity of 410 litres – expanding to 1,400 litres with the rear seatbacks folded down. Added to this is the 107-litre frunk.
The design features more sculpted surfaces, more pronounced shoulders and 18- to 20-inch wheels. The electric version stands out thanks to its new illuminated grille with 608 light points, a design feature that brings a distinctive element – already seen on Mercedes-Benz’s top-of-the-range models – to the compact segment.
