The Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) sector is in full effervescence, thanks to innovative solutions that optimise work processes and open up new creative horizons. From the well-established products of the tech giants to the numerous start-ups determined to conquer shares of an already very rich market - estimated at around $540 billion, with expectations of growth to $1,270 billion by 2028.

Navigating this ever-expanding ecosystem is increasingly complex. The overabundance of offers, often with similar characteristics, makes it difficult to distinguish the truly innovative solutions. For clarity, Andreessen Horowitz, one of the most influential venture capitalists globally, has compiled the third edition of the 'Top 100 GenAI Consumer Apps' on the A16z information portal, providing a detailed overview of current trends and consumer preferences in the GenAI market.

ChatGPT on the throne, but competitors are increasingly insidious

The ranking is divided into two categories, both based on unique monthly visits: 'AI web products' for desktop products and 'Ai Mobile Apps' for apps on mobile devices. Compared to the previous report in March, the new ranking sees as many as 30 per cent of unpublished Ai products, demonstrating the dynamism of this emerging market.

For the third time in a row, ChatGPT confirmed itself as the number one product on both web and mobile, by a wide margin. However, competition in the field of consumer AI assistants is becoming increasingly fierce. After Character AI, in third place is Perplexity, an AI search engine that aspires to rival Google, slightly surpassing ChatGPT in average visit duration (over seven minutes, according to Similarweb). Perplexity's popularity is also growing on mobile, with its entry in the top 50. Then there is Anthropic's Claude, a direct competitor to ChatGPT, which rises to fourth place from tenth in March.

Entertainment: image, video and text generations the most used modes

.

The ranking reveals some notable trends in emerging categories, with creative text, image, video and music generation tools continuing to attract more and more users. Of the companies on the web list, 52% focus on content generation or editing, in all modes. Of the 12 new entries, 58 per cent relate precisely to these tools. Among the best known are Luma (ranked 14th) and Viggle (21st) for video generation. Others include SeaArt (29th), an artistic image generator, while Udio (33rd), produces music on the basis of simple textual instructions. The music generator Suno made the biggest leap from 36th to 5th place in the last six months.

AI for image generation accounts for 41% of the major content creation sites, while for video generation there are three new entries: Luma, Viggle and Vidnoz, confirming the enormous hype generated by improvements in the quality of video output.

Mobile devices

.

As expected, content editing for images and videos is the most common use of Ai on smartphones, accounting for 22 per cent of the ranking, making it the second largest category in the mobile rankings. Although new start-ups are emerging, many of the top apps are already established creative tools, such as Meitu (9th), SNOW (30th) and Adobe Express (35th).

And then there are the underdogs, apps that may be little known, but are gaining more and more users. Among them is the personal assistant Luzia, which debuts in 25th place. Initially launched as a chatbot based on WhatsApp, it debuted as a standalone mobile app in December 2023. The company behind the app claims to have 45 million users worldwide, mainly Spanish-speaking.

What Bytedance is doing

Bytedance, the parent company of TikTok, is investing heavily in Ai. This is evidenced by the six positions achieved in the rankings, with three apps debuting: the edutech platform Gauth (44th), the bot builder Coze (45th) and the Chinese-language general assistant Doubao (47th), which entered the mobile list for the first time in 26th place. Also Bytedance products are the photo and video editor Hypic (19th) and the English-language version of Doubao, the Cici assistant in 34th place. An achievement made possible by the research and development division of the Chinese giant Flow, focused precisely on generative artificial intelligence applications, which will only be active from the end of 2023.

Beyond Content Generation

.

Two new categories of Ai assistants debuted on mobile devices: looks and dating. This includes three new entries: LooksMax AI (43rd), Umax (44th) and RIZZ (49th). LooksMax and Umax analyse user photos, rate them and make 'suggestions' for becoming more attractive. Umax also generates images of what the user would look like with a maximum score. LooksMax is the same, which also analyses the user's voice. In the onboarding screens of their apps, LooksMax claims to have more than 2 million users, while Umax claims to have 1 million. RIZZ does something else entirely: it is a 'dating assistant', i.e. it acts as an assistant to improve conversations on dating apps. Basically, users can upload a screenshot of a conversation or profile and receive suggestions on what to say.

Cities most involved with Ai

Looking through the results of the analysis, the countries and cities where generative Ai applications are used the most stand out. As chance would have it, in the United States, California is at the top with Menlo Park, Mountain View and Palo Alto, followed by Miami. In Asia, China (with Beijing and Shanghai), Hong Kong and India (with Gurugram) top the list. In Europe, London has the majority of Ai users. Surprisingly, in 2nd place in Germany is Laboe, a municipality of 5,000 inhabitants overlooking the English Channel, and Milan, in 3rd place, beating the much more populous Paris. "The Milanese have adopted Ai so quickly because they have finally found something that works longer hours than they do," says GenAi.
