In the Langhe

'Astemia' is no longer repentant and aims to double wine bottles in five years

After the name change, the 17 hectares under vine will increase to 27 hectares and the current 70 thousand bottles (distributed in 15 labels, 15 thousand of which are Barolo bottles) will reach 150 thousand

The first vintage of wines dates back to 2010, when 'L'Astemia Pentita' disrupted the traditional composure of the Langhe, with a distinctive and, why not, provocative style, from the shape of the bottles to the architecture of the cellar to the double apostrophe (no, it's not a typo). After all, it calls itself 'the most non-conformist winery in Barolo, where wine art and design meet for a multi-sensory experience'.

It is the style of its founder, Sandra Vezza, whose story of a woman from Langa who, as a teetotaler, cannot taste her wines, gave the idea for the name. And who, not by chance, also took over the historic design brand Gufram, irreverent and innovative. Now comes the change of name for the Cantina, which becomes more immediate, but at the same time, if you like, even more blatant, disappearing the pentimento and remaining just L'Astemia, as customers already called it.

The shape of the bottles becomes more conventional and the production target aims to double: in 5 years, the 17 hectares under vine should increase to 27 hectares and the current 70 thousand bottles (distributed in 15 labels, 15 thousand of which on Barolo bottles) should reach 150 thousand with the 2029 harvest. In terms of turnover, the aim is to go from one million to over 1.5 million. In the meantime, the transition to organic cultivation of all the vineyards has been completed.

"Most of our references will undergo an increase in production due to all the hectares under vines coming on stream," explains sales manager Marco Cossaro. The one with the greatest increase will be the classic method bubbly 'Charley'. From 10 thousand bottles of Alta Langa Docg in 2024, the production capacity with the start-up of all the vineyards will allow us to reach 25 thousand bottles in 5 years' time. The Viognier, produced for the first time with a limited production of 600 bottles by 2028 will reach more than 5 thousand bottles. But the production of traditional red wines is also growing: Barbera and Nebbiolo, which will reach 20 thousand bottles each. We want to add and strengthen the references to anticipate and reflect consumption trends, with the ultimate goal of having the right tools at our disposal to continue to promote and enhance the heritage of the Langhe, in our case the Barolo Cannubi".

"Ours is an ongoing challenge," says Sandra Vezza, "but it is in our DNA to always aim higher, without ever losing sight of our identity and our bond with these lands. Since 2010 we have not stopped studying, improving and being complicit with our vineyards. We have combined the best of the past with the tools of the future to restore the magic of these hills in a glass'.
