Mattarella: Republican Italy success story in the world thanks to social cohesion. To young people: courage
"I wish to address myself, in particular, to the youngest. Some people - who judge you without really knowing you - describe you as distrustful, aloof, angry: do not resign yourselves. Be demanding, be courageous. Choose your future. Feel responsible like the generation that built modern Italy eighty years ago. Best wishes! Happy 2026!"
'Our real strength has been social cohesion in freedom and democracy: it has enabled us to make Italy the great country it is today'. In a 15-minute speech on the unified networks, the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella fuelled the secular New Year's Eve celebration by adding a reasoned dose of food for thought to dinner and sparkling wine. Especially for the youngest, who are the future of the Republic.
It was precisely from this word that the Head of State began by illustrating a sort of 'imaginary album' of the 80 years that have passed since the referendum choice between the monarchy and the Republic, on 2 June 1946, which chose the latter. And he invited citizens to follow him in the rapid plunge into a past that has slowly made Italy 'a successful country'. It is a painstakingly composed 'mosaic' but one that, he stressed, must be observed as a whole, moving away from the individual tesserae. It starts from the constituent fathers who 'in the morning' argued over the government and 'in the afternoon' knew how to find compromises for the good of the country. "Shunning," he explained, quoting Pope Leo XIV, "violent verbal clashes and mutual accusations" in order to give Italy a Constitution all together. A call that is certainly valid today and that Mattarella delivered to the political class, so that on fundamental reforms political partisanship would cease.
Meloni thanks Mattarella 'for his encouragement to young people'
Picking up on this or that passage, the leaders of the various political camps applauded the Head of State's message: the themes of peace and youth, most present in the centre-right comments, are flanked by those of health and work in the words of the centre-left bigwigs. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni phoned Mattarella to express the government's 'appreciation' and to thank him 'for having emphasised the profound significance embodied by the 80th anniversary of the birth of the Republic. Italy presents itself at this appointment strong in the authoritativeness, credibility and respect that are recognised to it at a global level'. Meloni 'reiterated that Italy will continue to do everything possible, at every level, so that peace can return to Ukraine and the Middle East as soon as possible' and thanked Mattarella 'for his encouragement to the younger generation'. The presidents of the Senate Ignazio La Russa and the Chamber of Deputies Lorenzo Fontana also had a telephone conversation with Mattarella.
The reactions of the economy
Reactions also came from the world of business and trade unions. Carlo Sangalli, president of Confcommercio Imprese per l'Italia, emphasised that 'the President rightly asked young people to be demanding and courageous "like the generation that built modern Italy eighty years ago". He, in short, urged them to be protagonists - to quote the formula used by the President on another occasion - of 'constitutional patriotism', that is, of the commitment to the constant reversal of a Charter that was written with an eye to the future'.
"The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, has issued a formidable warning to institutional, political and social decision-makers: we must renew that constituent spirit that has made us great and that today must make us all row, united, in the direction of progress. In this endeavour, the Head of State recalls, decent and safe work is a central lever of development. A powerful and crystal clear message. Now it is up to us, all of us, to grasp it. Thank you President'. "Uil expresses its convinced appreciation for the strong reminder of the values of peace and republican history that characterised the enlightened speech by our President of the Republic," said Uil Pierpaolo Bombardieri general secretary in a note.
