Not one in a thousand makes it, as his co-citizen Gianni Morandi used to sing. But more or less one in three will make it to pursue their dream of becoming a doctor. Thanks to the increased number of places that universities have made available at the instigation of the Minister for Universities, Anna Maria Bernini. In the 2025/26 academic year there should be 24,026 slots for aspiring white coats: three thousand more than in 2024/25, an increase of 14%, which becomes 51% if we compare it with 2022.
The conditional is a must, since this is a provisional allocation that is subject to subsequent adjustments, but the increase is nevertheless evident. And the graph published alongside speaks for itself. After all, last year the bar for Medicine stood at 21,024, the year before at 19,555 and the year before that at 15,835.
State and non-state
Of the 24,000 available, just over 17,000 will be assigned in accordance with the new rules, which, as of this year, will do away with the entrance test, introducing the open first semester and moving the selection to the beginning of the second semester on the basis of grades in the three subjects identified by the Mur as fundamental: Chemistry and biochemical propaedeutics, Physics and Biology. Considering that some 53,000 students have enrolled and paid the relevant admission fee, on paper about one in three, as mentioned at the beginning, will move to the second semester.
The other 6,800 places up for grabs will be reserved for the most part (5,116) for non-state universities for courses in Italian or English, and the rest (1,632) for those in English at state universities. Two cases which, for this year, still involve an entrance test. The one in English (also known as Imat) is scheduled for 17 September.
Looking at the breakdown by university, the largest contingent, on paper, should once again fall to Sapienza di Roma with 1,802 slots for future doctors (in 2024/25 there were 1,571). It is followed by another capital city (Tor Vergata with 970) and the Alma Mater of Bologna with 940. Among private universities, Unicamillus prevails with 1,210 slots.
