There is the Albanian capital Tirana, followed by the Greek island of Corfu and Paris, at the top of the trendy tourist destinations for Italians travelling abroad for the summer. The Japan is the only intercontinental destination in the top ten to be reached from the Peninsula.
This is what emerges from Travel Trends , the report by Mastercard Economics Institute now in its fifth edition, which - for this ranking - processes flight booking data from June to August 2024 and calculates the share of each destination in total travel: comparing the numbers with 2019 levels, the ranking of the destinations with the highest share increase is drawn up.
European Football Championship push for Monaco
.Applying the method globally Munich emerges as the trendiest tourist destination for the coming summer season: the Fußball Arena München will host the opening match of the European Football Championship on 14 June.
Tokyo is in second place on the list: after the end of the Covid restrictions and the full resumption of flights, Japan has already recorded an extraordinary arrival of passengers in its territory, a trend favoured by the convenient devaluation of the yen that will continue in the coming months. For the third third, it is back to Europe with the capital of Albania Tirana, which, as mentioned, is also the top trend destination for flights from Italy.
Italy in fourth place among trendy destinations
Europe also leads in the trend ranking for the last 12 months ending March 2024 (here the change in the share of tourism transactions is calculated) for the top ten trend markets: four of the top five markets are European destinations. Japan is first, in second place is Ireland and in third is Romania: The rise of Bucharest - the report explains - is due in part to the accession to the Schengen area, which has prompted airlines to expand service to Romania. 'A move that has attracted additional tourists especially from Spain, Sweden and Denmark'.
