Today’s Cabinet meeting is set to approve the budget document, the former Ilva decree and differentiated autonomy
The Council of Ministers’ agenda also includes the new Highway Code and the Campi Flegrei decree
Key points
The Council of Ministers meeting scheduled for this afternoon at 7 pm at Palazzo Chigi has a packed agenda. The government will present the Dpb – the Budget Policy Document – which Italia must submit to the European Commission by 15 October. Here is a first glimpse of the 2027 Budget Bill, summarising its key elements.
Decree concerning the former Ilva
Another ‘key item’ on the agenda of the cabinet meeting is the decree concerning the former Ilva. The aim – as also stated by Under-Secretary Alfredo Mantovano at the latest meeting between the Government and the trade unions – is to include social safeguards for workers in the measure and to ensure that the use of the redundancy fund is not linked to the closure of the business, but rather “with a view to continuity”.
Differentiated autonomy: draft bills to finalise the process with the regions to be discussed at today’s Council of Ministers meeting
The government is also set to pass the bills today that will complete the process for ‘differentiated autonomy’ for the regions that have applied for it: Lombardy, Piedmont, Liguria and Veneto. The agenda of the Council of Ministers includes the final agreements with the four regions, as well as the draft laws granting further forms and specific conditions of autonomy, in accordance with Article 116, paragraph 3, of the Constitution. The draft laws will then have to be examined by Parliament.
Highway Code
Also on the agenda of the Council of Ministers was the new Highway Code, comprising 291 articles, finalised following a consultation chaired by the Minister for Infrastructure, Matteo Salvini, with over a hundred industry representatives and associations. Among the new provisions are the possibility of travelling in Europe with a digital driving licence and hefty fines for e-scooters.
Campi Flegrei
The decree concerning the Campi Flegrei was also on the agenda of the Council of Ministers. Minister Nello Musumeci has given assurances that the forthcoming decree on the Campi Flegrei will include further measures to tackle the consequences of bradyseism, reorganising the measures introduced from September 2023 onwards and providing for ‘a long-term approach compared with those adopted so far’.
