Tokyo Stock Exchange: Nikkei index closes down 0.94 per cent, weighed down by inflation fears
(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - The Tokyo Stock Exchange closed lower, with the Nikkei 225 index falling by 0.94 per cent to 68,309.46 points. Technology and export-related shares led the decline, with the automotive sector also under pressure. On the one hand, investors adopted a cautious stance, partly in anticipation of the US non-farm payrolls report due later today. However, domestic macroeconomic data pushed Tokyo lower. Inflation in the Tokyo area rose to 2.7% in September, exceeding the Bank of Japan’s 2% target and fuelling speculation about a possible rate rise. The rise in the unemployment rate to 2.5% in August also reinforced the pessimism.
The Topix broad index fell by 0.99 per cent to 4,091 points.
