Too hot: summer skiing on the Stelvio Glacier has been called off

Summer skiing on the Stelvio Glacier in Alta Valtellina has been suspended for the Ferragosto bank holiday. Sifas (Società Impianti Funiviari allo Stelvio) today announced to operators and tourists in the ski area a difficult but necessary decision, given the temperatures recorded in recent days, with persistent heatwaves even at high altitudes, the lack of night-time cooling and refreezing of the snowpack, and the frequent thunderstorms which have further compromised the condition of the glacier.

“These factors,” the statement reads, “make it impossible to guarantee the usual standards of quality and, above all, the safety required for summer skiing.” Consequently, with effect from today, Saturday 15 August, skiing on the Stelvio Glacier is suspended until further notice. However, the cable car service providing access to the glacier remains operational. “Our team,” Sifas emphasised, “will continue to monitor the situation and mountain conditions constantly, in the hope that temperatures will drop and the condition of the glacier will improve. We will keep everyone promptly updated on any potential reopening. We thank you for your understanding and cooperation.”
