Nike has suspended online sales in Turkey through its website and mobile app, just days after Turkey raised customs taxes on online purchases from abroad.
"We cannot guarantee our consumers that their orders will arrive smoothly and on time, so we are suspending online orders from Turkey for the time being," the US trainer giant said in a statement posted on its official Turkish website, adding that the group "continues to examine the impact of recent changes to customs regulations on the shopping experience of Turkish consumers". The company will still continue to sell its products in Turkey in its own shops and those of its affiliates.
Turkey decided this week to lower the tax cap on online purchases by natural persons from EUR 150 to EUR 30. The tax rate was also increased from 20 to 30 per cent for goods purchased from the EU and from 30 to 60 per cent for goods purchased from other countries.
In Ankara's intention, the new customs measures aim to reduce 'negative effects' on market share and employment, including among shop owners and small and medium-sized enterprises, and currency imbalances.
