'Tosca' opens Glyndebourne Opera Festival
Cole Porter's musical 'High Society' in London; young cellists at the Trento Festival of Economics
In London the Social Season is in full swing: the Glyndebourne Festival opens, the Chelsea Flower Show - and in June Ascot, Wimbledon, and so on. In this atmosphere, here at the Barbican is a musical like 'High Society', signed for music by a giant like Cole Porter; the story is that of the famous film 'Scandal in Philadelphia'.

From 19 May to 11 July at the Barbican 'High Society', a musical signed by a giant such as Cole Porter, based on the musical film of the same name starring Grace Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby - itself based on the film 'Scandal in Philadelphia', starring Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant and James Stewart. After the London performances the show will go on tour in England and Ireland, ending on 14 November in Eastbourne.

The famous Glyndebourne opera festival opens on 21 May with 'Tosca'. Since 1934 it has been presenting performances in this unique setting in the East Sussex meadows, with picnics during the long interval; it continues until 30 August. "Tosca" is conducted by the festival's musical director, Robert Ticciati, with the London Philharmonic Orchestra; in the title role the young American Caitlin Gotimer. In addition to Puccini's opera - which has never before been staged at the festival - Rossini's 'Il Turco in Italia', Monteverdi's 'L'Orfeo', Britten's 'Billy Budd', R. Strauss's 'Arianna a Nasso', and Mozart's 'Il Ratto dal Serraglio' will also be performed.

For five centuries, the cello has exerted its fascination on all ages and generations, thanks to its innate characteristics and its ability to adapt to contemporary demands. Here is a sonic journey of discovery of this powerful instrument, with this ensemble composed of young people who have already won competitions. The formation has a versatility that takes it from a quartet up to a cello orchestra, in an age range starting from the very youngest.
