Tourism, travel anxiety for the under-35s: illnesses and emergencies worry
Allianz Partners' Global Travel Confidence Index research: people do not give up travelling but choose closer destinations
Key points
In the face of geopolitical instability and economic uncertainties, people are not giving up travelling but are revising their plans by favouring a closer destination and cutting non-essential expenses in other areas in order to still be able to enjoy a summer break. This is the picture provided by the Global Travel Confidence Index by Allianz Partners, which shows that travellers under 35 are more anxious about travel than those over 50.
The fears of the under-35s
In particular, concern is high about illness (63% vs. 48%), emergencies (61% vs. 49%), the climate crisis (61% vs. 46%), public health situations (61% vs. 44%), lost luggage (61% vs. 41%) or travel documents (60% vs. 40%) and the need to repair or replace mobile devices (48% vs. 29%).
The intention to travel does not retreat
Global travel intentions are not retreating: according to the survey (conducted by Ipsos on 11,010 people in 10 key markets, including Italy, China, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, India, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland and the United States) three quarters of the sample (74%) plan a summer holiday, a percentage that for Italia is 67%.
As mentioned, domestic travel is gaining ground: 42% globally and 41% of Italians plan to spend their holidays in their own country.
"A desperate need for a holiday"
Rising costs are the biggest challenge: 77% of global travellers and 79% of Italian travellers say they are concerned about rising prices. But demand for holidays remains strong: 86% of respondents, and 85% of Italian respondents, continue to consider an annual holiday a priority and more than four out of five people (82% global sample), and 81% of Italians, say they "desperately need a holiday" this year. Evidence, the research states, "that travel is seen as a way to escape the global state of 'permanent crisis'".
