Revenues from the tourist tax soared in 2024, reaching, excluding Roma Capitale (which has a different counting system), 760 million euro, 19% more than the previous year.

According to an elaboration by the Centro Studi enti locali on data from Mef, Banca d'Italia and Istat, Florence is at the top of the list of receipts from the tourist tax, with further growth compared to previous years, rising from 45.5 million in 2022 to 69.8 in 2023 and then again, with a 10% increase, to 76.9 million in 2024.

In second place is Milan, which shortens the gap to the Tuscan city and rises - with an increase of EUR 14.4 million (+23%) - to EUR 76.5 million.

The third position is also firm, still occupied by Venice, which, however, slowed down compared to the other great cities of art and closed 2024 with just under 40 million euro, up 4% compared to the previous year.

They are followed by Trento with 29.7 million, Naples with 19 million (+9%), Bologna with 15.4 million (+22%), Rimini with 14.7 million (+28%) and Turin with 10.3 million, compared to 9.8 million the previous year.

The smallest municipality among the 'top ten' giants is Sorrento. Despite its little more than 15,000 inhabitants, the international fame of its coastline earned it a 9.1 million euro treasure trove - a 32% leap over 2023 - and allowed it to overtake even Palermo, which stopped at 8.7 million despite a resounding increase over 2023, when it had tourist overnight stays that brought it a dowry of 4.8 million.

Also significant was the increase recorded in Genova (from 5.1 to 7.3 million), Bolzano (from 961 thousand to 1.8 million), Taranto (from 143 thousand to 306 thousand) and Siracusa (from 1.3 million to 2.3 million). In contrast, among the large Italian cities: Livorno (-17%), Salerno (-10%), Reggio Emilia (-10%), Forlì (-8%), Novara (-5%) and Terni (-2%).

Stay tax only in a quarter of municipalities

Although on the rise compared to the past (+379 in 5 years), the local authorities that have actually instituted the tourist tax are a tiny minority: in 2024 there were 1,382, just under a quarter of the 5,700 that would be entitled to do so. "The bulk of the entities continue, therefore," explains Veronica Potenza, researcher at the Centro studi Enti Locali (Centre for the Study of Local Entities), which elaborated the research, "to renounce potentially substantial sums in the hope of thus being more attractive to tourists, thus accepting the requests that have always been put forward by the sector's trade associations. .

All in all, it is still the municipalities in northern Italy that take the lion's share when it comes to revenue from the tourist tax. .

Reception facilities in northern Italy collected over 450 million euro, almost 60% of the total, but the Mezzogiorno is catching up, driven above all by the excellent result of the islands (+29%). Overall, 2024 collections exceeded those of 2023 in 62% of municipalities.

A deterioration was only observed in 374 entities, more than half of which were in northern Italy (225). At the provincial level, the revenues of the entities ofBarletta-Andria-Trani (+200%), Bari (+195%), Massa Carrara (+109%), Reggio Calabria (+90%) and Fermo (+76%) grew the most. .

Declining instead, in addition to the already mentioned Aosta, were the takings in the Cagliari area (-11%), Reggio Emilia (-10%), Parma (-5%), Foggia (-3%), Salerno (-2%) and Ascoli Piceno (-1%)..
