Toyota updates the Highlander maxi SUV, now electric only
Manufactured and sold exclusively in the USA, the 2027 model year is part of a programme of aesthetic as well as technological overhaul of the Japanese brand's extra high-wheel models inaugurated by the new Rav4 and later by the Hilux pick-up truck, which is also electrically powered for the first time.
Key points
Toyota relaunches the Highlander maxi suv with the 2027 model year, making it the first battery-powered seven-seat suv. But that's not all, as it features an all-new exterior design, plus a redesigned cabin with lots of extra technology. The result is that the Highlander 2027 fits into a programme of offer revision introduced by Toyota with the revamped Rav4 and the Hilux pick-up which is offered, for the first time, in an electric variant.
Two versions for as many battery sizes available
Two versions of the Highlander EV 2027 are available: XLE and Limited. The XLE is offered with both front and all-wheel drive, as well as two battery sizes. The Limited, on the other hand, is only with all-wheel drive. The basic XLE has a 77.0 kWh battery and a single electric motor with 165 kW or 221 hp, 268 Nm of torque and a range of 462 km. The XLE AWD still has a 77.0 kWh battery, but the power output is 252 kW or 338 hp, for a range of around 435 km.
Vehivle-to-load (V2L) technology expected to be available
Alternatively, there is a larger 95.8 kWh battery on both the XLE AWD and the Limited version that offers all-wheel drive as standard for a range that increases to 515 km. Even with the larger battery, power remains unchanged at 252 kW or 338 hp maximum output. For both versions, the Highlander also introduces vehivle-to-load (V2L) technology to supply both external devices and emergency power in critical situations.
Inside there is a central 14.0 inch touchscreen
Also changing is the exterior design. Taut lines, wide wheel arches, a full-width LED light signature and flush body handles complete a more aerodynamic look. The headlamp clusters and front grille also contribute to renewing the front end. Toyota's maxi high-wheeled model also focuses on technology. The 14.0-inch central touchscreen is compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wireless and is flanked by a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.
Features include a panoramic roof and ambient lighting
Device charging is provided on all three rows of the new Highlander. There is also an optional fixed panoramic glass roof that is the largest in the Toyota range and there is even ambient lighting that can be customised with 64 colours. Standard upholstery for all three rows is leatherette, while heated front seats are standard with ventilation available as an option as is heating for the second row of seats.
