Lots of excitement and just as many twists and turns characterised the 2024 season finale of the World Rally Championship (WRC) with Toyota's final victory among the manufacturers and Neuville's among the drivers.

The Japanese manufacturer won thanks to the points won by its drivers Elfyn Evans and Sébastien Ogier in a one-two sweep of the Super Sunday standings to the detriment of Hyundai, which nevertheless celebrated the drivers' title with the Neuville-Wydaeghe crew.

Toyota wins race and manufacturers' title in Japan

On its home turf at the Rally Japan, Toyota won its fourth consecutive manufacturers' title thanks to the excellent work of its crews and the team's strategy.

At the finish in Japan, Toyota and Hyundai were separated by 15 points, in favour of Hyundai, which, however, lost its hopes of victory during the weekend when the crew currently leading the race, Tänak-Järveoja, went off the road during SS17 Nukata1, the first special stage on Sunday.

It is the eighth manufacturers' title won by Toyota in the WRC, which brings it to second place, alongside Citroën, in the all-time standings.

Mounts won during the season

.

Last weekend Evans and co-driver Scott Martin proved to be the masters of the demanding Japanese special stages, celebrating their first victory in exactly one year when they won the same event. A result that allows them to finish the year in second place in the drivers' and co-drivers' standings.

Ogier and co-driver Vincent Landais ended the year with their seventh podium finish out of 10 starts, including three victories, remembering that the French driver has a part-time agreement with Toyota, so he only ran part of the scheduled races during the season. Kalle Rovanperä and Jonne Halttunen also contributed four victories with a part-time commitment, as did teammates Ogier-Landrais.

Katsuta and navigator Aaron Johnston completed the season with a second consecutive top-four finish.

Finally, the debut season of the GR Yaris Rally2 car was crowned with top honours as Sami Pajari and Enni Mälkönen took the Wrc2 championship at the last round. The Finnish crew had an excellent season, including three appearances in Rally1 with Tgr-Wrt, which he crowned with intelligent driving in Japan to finish second in Wrc2 with his Printsport-managed car, enough to seal the title.

Toyota line-up for the 2025 Wrc season

.

After winning eight rallies (out of thirteen) in 2024 and taking its fourth consecutive constructors' championship at the end-of-season Rally Japan, the Toyota team is already thinking about next season with the mission of defending its crown and fighting for the drivers' and co-drivers' titles.

The team will have an expanded line-up of cars and drivers, with four or five Gr Yaris Rally1 entries appearing in each event.

New, but already in the air for some time now, is Sami Pajari's participation for the entire season aboard Rally1. The name of his co-driver has not yet been confirmed.

World champions Kalle Rovanperä and Jonne Halttunen will return to full-time racing. Elfyn Evans and co-driver Scott Martin continue for their sixth consecutive season with the team. Takamoto Katsuta and Aaron Johnston are also confirmed for another year. Eight-time world champion Sébastien Ogier and co-driver Vincent Landais will once again compete in a partial programme of selected events.

The presence of Matti Latvala as Team Principal is also confirmed.
