Tragedy during pre-race testing at the Rally Poland: the Italian Junior 2024 champion, Matteo Doretto, 21, from Pordenone, died of the consequences of a road accident. This was confirmed to Ansa by Grzegorz Różański, spokesman for the fire brigade of the Polish city of Olsztyn. Co-driver Samuele Pellegrino is in good condition in hospital, Różański specified. The Peugeot 208 Rally4 of the Italian crew crashed into a tree in the streets around Elganowo, near Pasym.
According to what Ansa was told by Różański, the car driven by Doretto left the road at high speed, crashing into the only tree in the area. The impact was very violent and mainly involved the driver's side. The fire brigade worked for a long time to extract the young driver from the cockpit. The doctor who arrived on the scene could only pronounce him dead. The co-driver, 26-year-old Samuele Pellegrino, on the other hand, got out of the Peugeot 208 Rally 4 on his own. He witnessed the rescue attempts of his friend and colleague and was then precautionarily admitted to hospital, in shock.
