With the end of operations on the Brenner-Verona line, the construction sites of the Italian rail network (Rfi, a company of the FS-Ferrovie dello Stato group) opened in the summer in Trentino-Alto Adige have come to an end. The main works, which involved the Bolzano-Merano, Trento-Bassano del Grappa and Brennero-Verona lines, were necessary to raise the punctuality, regularity and reliability indexes, as well as to upgrade performance. Below are the details of the works carried out.

Bolzano-Merano

On the line, preparatory activities were carried out for the activation of the Ertms (European Rail Traffic Management System), the system - based on European standards - that allows trains from different countries to run seamlessly on all European lines. The construction sites have also affected several stations. In particular, in Bolzano, work is in progress to raise the first truncated platform and the second platform, and a technological upgrade of the infrastructure has been carried out; in Merano, the old shelters on the station platforms have been removed and new ones are being built; in the Bolzano Sud, Bolzano Casanova and Merano stations, work has begun on replacing the lift systems. Finally, maintenance activities were carried out on the stations of the line and the lighting systems were upgraded in the stations of Ponte d'Adige, Vilpiano, Lana, Merano Maia Bassa and Merano, in order to improve the decorum and accessibility of the areas open to the public.

Trento-Bassano del Grappa

Extraordinary maintenance work was carried out at Borgo Valsugana Est and maintenance activities between Primolano and Bassano. In the Grigno station, work has begun on the construction of a new platform to serve passengers, while in the Trento station, work is underway on raising the first platform and restoring the related canopy. Railway traffic between the stations of Trento and Borgo Valsugana Est will remain interrupted until 4:50 a.m. on 9 December 2025 for works by Rfi to upgrade the infrastructure and technology required for electrification of the line

Brennero-Verona

Systematic track maintenance work was completed, maintenance of the Fleres tunnel was carried out, sections of track were renewed at the Brenner station, and work on the Val di Riga bypass project was carried out. In addition, work was started on the construction of the lift on the first platform in the Sterzing station.

In Bolzano, the government approves station investments

.

At its meeting on 19 August 2025, the Bolzano provincial government, acting on a proposal from the provincial councillor for mobility and infrastructure, Daniel Alfreider, approved an agreement with Rfi regarding extraordinary maintenance measures and increased safety and accessibility at several South Tyrolean railway stations. The stations along the Fortezza-San Candido line will be completely modernised in the coming months. In total, 13 stations will be upgraded by 2025. The works will be carried out at the same time as the closures due to major construction sites, in order to exploit synergies and avoid further inconveniences for travellers.

The total investment amounts to approximately EUR 7.2 million, divided equally between the Autonomous Province of Bolzano and the Italian railway network (EUR 3.6 million each). The main interventions concern the renovation of platforms and pavements, the upgrading of subways and lifts, the modernisation of roofs and LED lighting systems, as well as the refurbishment of buildings and services for passengers. Special attention is paid to safety, accessibility and energy efficiency. "Thanks to the extraordinary plan linked to the Olympics, we can realise fundamental investments for our stations," remarked councillor Alfreider,

In addition to the work in Val Pusteria, important work is also being carried out on other railway lines in South Tyrol. In Vinschgau, for example, platforms are being extended to allow the use of modern trains. In some stations in Val Pusteria, on the other hand, there are still delays in the testing of lifts, which will, however, be completed shortly.
