Elections in the United States

USA 2024, Trump elected 47th president. 'It will be the Golden Age, America will be great again, I will stop the wars'

The Republican leader won the crucial states considered to be in the balance, the South and the Midwest. Even Pennsylvania, the real battleground of the campaign. And in his first speech as (re)elected president, he relaunched the 'Maga movement'.

"We have made history, it is the greatest political victory of all time. We will fix the country, we will fix the borders. And we will make America great again." Donald Trump has been elected the 47th president of the United States of America and the enthusiasm in Florida in front of his supporters is unstoppable. The Republican front-runner won decisively: he won all the crucial states, considered to be in the balance, in the South and the Midwest. Pennsylvania, the real battleground of the campaign, is also decisive in this election. And even Arizona and possibly Nevada may have given the former president success. In his victory speech Trump quoted Elon Musk, calling him a 'super-genius' and thanking him for his support. He promised that he will fight 'every day for you until his last breath' and 'it will be America's golden age', and made a reference to the international situation: 'They say I'm going to start wars, but I won't, I'm going to end them'.

Electors v. Biden and Harris

Decisive in the voting motivations - according to experts - is the economic unease expressed by many voters, the judgement that the country is going in the wrong direction. And that it is 'all the Democrats' fault', as Trump repeated throughout the campaign.

The head-to-head race indicated for weeks by the polls was there, but the challenge, although open to the last, was resolved in all the key states with Trump's victory. In Pennsylvania, precisely, but also in Michigan and Wisconsin, where he appeared to be the clear favourite. As well as in Georgia and North Carolina, the first two swing states to vote for him. The Democrats' blue wall collapsed, while eve's predictions once again underestimated the strength of Trump's populism.

Musk's exultation

.

"Game, set and match", game, set and match: this is how, already in the night, before the final data, Elon Musk, the main backer and animator of the Republican campaign had summed up Trump's success on social media. Fears were already spreading among the Democrats that they had miscalculated, again, against the communication skills of an obvious but unpredictable opponent.

0ttimism spread quickly to Trump's election night headquarters in West Palm Beach and to his Mar-a-Lago residence, also in Florida. Supporters and party donors began to converge en masse, before dawn, at the convention centre to cheer Trump's victory.

Kamala Harris, on the other hand, let it be known during the night from her headquarters at Howard University, Washington, that she would not be speaking in the heat of the moment but would address the country on Wednesday.

The Great Defeat

.

Harris, the Vice-President and Democratic nominee, did worse than Joe Biden in many constituencies and was also below the results of Hillary Clinton who lost to Trump in 2016. Trump, on the contrary, outperformed his own performance in 2020 and in many cases also in 2016. If confirmed by the final tallies, this time the Democrats cannot even claim a symbolic victory in the country: Harris may in fact have been defeated by Trump not only in large electorates, but, in contrast to Clinton, also in the overall popular vote. The America that voted, with a high turnout, has in short chosen Trump.

Electoral Flows

Analyses of electoral flows will better explain in the coming days what the reasons for Trump's victory were, in which groups of voters the tycoon found the most support.

Certainly The Donald won the bet, against everyone: against the progressives and the liberals, against the moderate conservatives who turned their backs on him, and also against his own staffers who throughout the campaign asked him to restrain himself, to stay on the issues of the debate, not to indulge in vulgarity and verbal violence. Trump won, as we saw him in the rallies, out of the box. He certainly did better than in the past among ethnic minorities.

For Vice-President Harris, there is the almost certain certainty, which had already emerged during the count, that she was disproportionately penalised by the votes cast against Joe Biden's administration: in a wave of discontent that Trump was able to exploit to his advantage by attacking the Democrats on the issues of the economy and inflation, as well as on security and illegal immigration.

In addition, as the data as they are released show, the women's votes on which Harris relied were not enough to offset the underlying prejudices against the first woman and against a black woman running for president. Only 54% of women voters supported her, less than the 57% achieved by Biden four years ago. While Trump's charisma has taken a toll on males and especially younger males.

The vote in Congress

.

The vote for Congress in turn brought successes for the Republicans. They actually won a majority in the Senate, snatching at least two seats from the Democrats, enough to flip control of the upper chamber. They won in West Virginia, a seat made vacant by the retirement of moderate Democrat Joe Manchin, and in Ohio, where veteran progressive populist Sherrod Brown lost to Bernie Moreno, a Colombian-born car dealer entrepreneur and Trump follower. Democrats are very unlikely to pick up seats in other races. The Senate is only renewed by a third of the 100 total seats.

In the fully re-elected House, the situation is more uncertain: the Republicans have an outgoing majority of five seats and have currently won one more seat, but some twenty seats - from California to New York - have not yet been decided.
