UN, Trump: ‘I will immediately send a massive military presence to Greenland; we will build two bases’

US President Donald Trump has stated that, from now on, government documents will use the term ‘super intelligence’ instead of ‘artificial intelligence’, reiterating that the warnings about AI are a hoax . ‘From this moment onwards, all US documents – and hopefully those of the world as well – will be amended to use the much more precise term “super” rather than “artificial”. So it is super intelligence,’ said Trump in his address to the United Nations General Assembly. “I have no intention of hindering the growth of something that will be greater than the Industrial Revolution,” he added.

Following the agreement with Denmark and Greenland, “we will immediately deploy a massive military presence” to the island. Donald Trump made this statement at the UN , describing the agreement – which is due to be signed shortly at the UN Headquarters – as “extraordinary” . The United States “will begin to establish a significant military presence by building two major military bases”, he announced.

Trump defends the war launched against Iran, once again insinuating that, had it not been for him, Tehran would have acquired a nuclear weapon. He begins by referring to the Hamas attack on Israel nearly three years ago. During his speech, he said: ‘In America, we have just marked the 25th anniversary of the worst terrorist attack in history, 11 September [2001], which killed 3,000 people just a few miles from here. In two weeks’ time, we will mark the third anniversary of the 7 October attack in Israel, where Iranian-funded terrorists tortured, maimed and killed 1,200 innocent civilians, including dozens of Americans. Iran’s Supreme Leader celebrated that massacre and described it as a ‘service to humanity’. The same regime has massacred over 72,000 of its own citizens this year. Just imagine if such a vile regime were ever to be enabled to carry out large-scale terrorist attacks whilst protected by a nuclear shield. This was the reality we had to face, a reality that far too many preferred to ignore.”

‘Two years ago, our country was dead. Now we are in a golden age. We have taken decisive action to solve the world’s problems’, including the ‘fanatical regime in Iran. They used to be the bullies of the Middle East, but they are no longer so. Since I took office, my commitment has been unwavering in ensuring that Tehran does not acquire a nuclear weapon.” Donald Trump said this at the UN General Assembly. Among the many people in the hall listening to him were the First Lady Melania Trump, the Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent, the US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz and the Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.

Wars without a well-thought-out strategy – especially when they are started by a president like Donald Trump – can lead to paradoxical situations. It would have been almost unthinkable to see a rebel movement emerging from the rugged mountains of Yemen, the poorest country in the Arab world, negotiating militarily with the world superpower, the United States. And to do so almost from a position of strength. The Shi’a Houthi rebels, one of Iran’s allied militias, have so far played their cards well. The US leader added that the US economy is ‘envied by the whole world’, that the military is ‘the most powerful in the world’, that the country has never been doing so well and that ‘the future is bright’. Trump also referred to the record highs achieved on Wall Street. “Two years ago, our country was dead,” he added, also taking credit for the crackdown on immigration at the border.

“The United Nations Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese must not be silenced for telling the truth. Illegal settlements in the West Bank are making the two-state solution increasingly unviable.” This was stated by Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

In a speech entirely focused on the mid-term elections, Donald Trump will, from the podium at the United Nations, accuse the American left, and in particular the Democratic socialists, of coordinating with the communist regime in Cuba. ‘For decades, the Cuban regime has been coordinating with left-wing extremists and communist networks here in the United States,’ reads a preview of Trump’s speech released by the White House, ‘as our State Department has shown in detail; they have cultivated relationships with subversives, extremist groups and US communist parties, as well as the Democratic Socialists of America.”

“There is no such thing as a global government, and as long as I am President, there will be no global taxes.” This was stated by Donald Trump. “Freedom was not a gift that Americans obtained easily and, after 250 years, it is not something we will ever give up,” the US President said, according to a preview provided by the White House.

“The UN is failing in one of its most important missions: to free humanity from the scourge of war. Its credibility has never been so low. Its ability to protect the most vulnerable has never been so weak.” This was stated by the Brazilian President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, speaking at the 81st session of the General Assembly. “We are all held hostage by the inaction of the UN Security Council”, he added.

‘Shame on you for supporting the terrorist monsters of Hamas who have massacred our people. Shame on you for inciting unrest against New York’s Jewish community. I am going to the UN. I will tell the truth about our heroic soldiers. And I will tell the truth about you.’ According to the Times of Israel, these remarks were made by the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, in a video accusing the Mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, of supporting Hamas and encouraging violence against the city’s Jewish community.

Earlier, in an interview with CNN, Mamdani described Netanyahu as ‘a war criminal’ and ‘the architect of a horrific genocide against the Palestinian people’. The Mayor of New York also stated that the decision by the International Criminal Court (ICC), which issued an arrest warrant for the Israeli Prime Minister, must be respected. However, Mamdani also stated that New York “does not have the authority to execute the ICC warrant”. The Israeli Prime Minister is due to address the UN General Assembly on Thursday.

“I would like to thank the UN Security Council for having adopted, by an overwhelming majority, a resolution condemning Iran’s cowardly terrorist attacks against commercial shipping. This resolution – I am pleased to say – has garnered more co-sponsors amongst UN Member States than any other Security Council resolution in history.” Donald Trump made these remarks in his address to the UN General Assembly, according to advance details provided to the press by the White House.

It is worth noting that President Donald Trump is addressing the United Nations General Assembly at a difficult time for the world and for his presidency. The global economy has been destabilised by his war with Iran, and concerns are mounting over the social impact of artificial intelligence. The tycoon’s cut in financial support for the United Nations raises questions about the organisation’s future. Following Tuesday’s speech, Trump is scheduled to meet with the leaders of the United Kingdom, Japan and Venezuela, as well as representatives from the Gulf Cooperation Council countries. The ongoing conflict with Iran and its impact on oil markets are key issues. Trump must also contend with frustration over the war between Russia and Ukraine, which continues despite his mediation efforts.

Yesterday, the three media organisations filed a lawsuit, and the TV stations in the White House press pool (those which take turns following the US president wherever he goes and share their footage with others) said they would halt their coverage as a sign of solidarity. As well as CNN, these include ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox (which is close to Trump).

“The offensive against the Palestinians in Gaza” that followed the “abominable terrorist attacks by Hamas” on 7 October 2023 has resulted in “a scale of death and destruction unprecedented in all my years as Secretary-General”, Mr Guterres said. “The International Court of Justice has issued legally binding provisional measures,” he said, citing the “Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip” and stating that “all parties must respect international law”.

Technological power alone cannot guarantee security.” This was stated by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres at the opening of the 81st session of the General Assembly. “An interconnected, multipolar world can create the conditions for a more balanced and representative resolution of global problems,” said Guterres, convinced that “to build the future, it is important to build a network”, adding that “even superpowers have limited power; the events of recent years have made this increasingly clear”. Guterres then emphasised that “cooperation is fundamental to global stability”.

The international community cannot stand by and watch as the prospect of a two-state solution for Israelis and Palestinians fades away. This was stated by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres in his report to the UN General Assembly, linking the future of the peace process to current developments in the occupied West Bank.

“We cannot allow the two-state solution to slip away before our very eyes,” said Guterres.

One of the conflicts – the situation in Ukraine – dominated the opening proceedings. Ahead of his informal meeting today with President Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump has hinted at a call for de-escalation and an end to attacks on the Russian invader’s energy infrastructure, citing the global shock caused by rising petrol and diesel prices. “The war between Russia and Ukraine is by far the most difficult conflict,” admitted Vice-President JD Vance, whilst expressing hope for “progress”, which he described as “a matter of time”.

Donald Trump has told his advisers that he would like to meet with Iranian officials if “the conditions are right”. This is according to CNN, which cites sources suggesting that the president could meet with the Iranians on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, accompanied by his advisers. At present, however, nothing has been scheduled.

“Across the Middle East, conflicts are multiplying in a chain reaction. I appeal to the leaders present in this chamber to make the most of this high-level week to promote de-escalation and dialogue. Let us send a clear message together: the fighting must cease, humanitarian aid must be allowed to flow, and the rights and freedoms of navigation must be fully restored, in accordance with international law”. This was stated by the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres as he opened the 81st General Assembly at the UN Headquarters in his final address of his term of office.
