US President Donald Trump said he intends to file a $15 billion libel and slander lawsuit against the New York Times. The White House accuses the famous newspaper of acting as a 'mouthpiece' for the Democratic Party.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump emphasised the Times' support for former presidential candidate Kamala Harris in the 2024 election. The requested amount exceeds the market capitalisation of the New York Times Co. which currently stands at around $9.65 billion.

The prosecution: lying for years about Trumpian affairs and politics

The US president gave no other specific examples of the Times' pro-Dem press coverage, but said that the newspaper "has lied for decades about your favourite president (ME!), my family, my business, the America First movement, MAGA, and our nation as a whole".

The libel and slander suit was filed in Florida, Trump added. In the first instance, the Times did not respond to requests for comment on the matter.

Presidential offensive against media critical of the White House

Trump has targeted other media organisations with lawsuits since returning to the presidency. In July, Paramount Global reached a settlement with Trump over a lawsuit accusing broadcaster CBS of election interference for airing two different versions of a 60 Minutes interview with then Vice President Kamala Harris in October.

In December, Trump reached a settlement with Walt Disney Co.'s ABC, under which the television network agreed to donate $15 million to Trump's future presidential foundation or museum. The case had stemmed from allegations that one of the network's anchors defamed the president-elect while describing a court ruling made against him in the past.

Trump referred to these agreements in his latest post, claiming that they were 'a long-term INTENT and pattern of abuse, which is both unacceptable and illegal'.

"The New York Times has been allowed to freely lie, slander and libel me for far too long, and this must stop, NOW!" wrote Trump.
