Donald Trump has announced his Golden Dome: he has launched plans to build an unprecedented missile shield to 'protect our country'. It will be built in three years, with an initial allocation of 25 billion contained in the budget bill, his Big, Beautiful Bill, now being debated in Congress, and a total investment of 175 billion. At least according to the administration's forecasts.
"Ronald Reagan wanted it for years but didn't have the funds," the president said from the Oval Office, nor the technology. Now the US has 'super technology'. Trump was flanked by Pentagon chief Pete Hesgeth and Space Force General Michael Guetlein, who will lead the project.
"This is very important for the success and also the survival of our country. It's a pretty wicked world out there," he added. Trump had signed an initial executive order to pursue the space shield in January and the Pentagon had subsequently launched studies on multiple hypotheses before the current announcement.
Among military analysts, there is no shortage of sceptics, on time and cost as well as effectiveness. The bill, according to some estimates, could eventually exceed 500 billion. The maxi project is inspired by Israel's Iron Dome, to protect the United States from all kinds of missiles, including hypersonic devices. The continental dimensions of the Golden Dome, however, raise doubts.
One of the crucial elements of the new defence shield will be a complex network of thousands of small satellites to detect, track and potentially intercept incoming missiles. This constellation of satellites will be capable of intervening in the moments immediately following a missile launch from land bases or submarines.
