US president-elect Donald Trump nominates Republican Brendan Carr as the next chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Carr has been a member of the commission since 2012 and previously served as general counsel of the Fcc. He has been unanimously confirmed by the Senate three times and was nominated by both Trump and President Joe Biden to the commission.

Carr has appeared in recent months on Fox News Channel, criticising the pre-election appearance of Democratic vice-presidential Kamala Harris on Saturday Night Live. Last month he wrote an editorial defending SpaceX, the satellite company owned by Trump's number one supporter Elon Musk. He is 'a freedom of expression warrior', according to The Donald's views, expressed at the time of the appointment.

Carr's response on X was not long in coming: 'We must dismantle the censorship cartel', imposed according to Carr by the tech giants Facebook, Google, Apple and Microsoft, 'and restore Americans' right to free speech', he wrote. The reference is to the anti-fake news rules that Big Tech equipped itself with in the Covid days. In short, the appointment of government posts by "The Donald" continues, which has not failed to lead to controversy in the US as in the rest of the world.
