Trump appoints Todd Blanche attorney general
Blanche had already held the role of acting attorney general for a few months when Pam Bondi was removed
US President Donald Trump announced at a private dinner at the White House his intention to nominate Todd Blanche as the new Attorney General (Justice Secretary).
The announcement was also made via a video posted on X by presidential adviser Dan Scavino, in which Trump formally anticipates the decision, saying: 'Tomorrow I will instruct Dan and all others involved in this complex process, which will proceed quickly, to make Blanche the permanent attorney general.
The appointment, once made official, will end the approximately two-month period in which Blanche held the position on an interim basis, taking over after the removal of Pam Bondi.
In a statement, spokeswoman Abigail Jackson emphasised the 'solid' relationship between Trump and Blanche, calling it 'very effective' and putting it in the context of the administration's security and justice strategy.
Blanche's possible appointment had been considered highly likely for several weeks. Trump has repeatedly referred to him as a trusted ally, emphasising his legal expertise and his full alignment with the administration's policy priorities. During his time as acting Attorney General, Blanche promoted a number of initiatives with a strong political and judicial impact. These included new investigations into figures considered adversaries of the president, including former FBI Director James Comey, as well as action on gun regulations and federal anti-fraud campaigns.
