Donald Trump is back to attacking American TV comics. The US president welcomed Abc's suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live! after the controversy following the host's comments on the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

"Great news for America: the Jimmy Kimmel Show, which was struggling to get satisfactory ratings, has been cancelled. Congratulations to Abc for finally having the courage to do what needed to be done," Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. "Kimmel has no talent and gets even worse ratings than Colbert, if that's possible. That leaves Jimmy and Seth, two total losers, on the Nbc fake news station. Their ratings are terrible too. Do it, Nbc!!!".

This is not the first time Trump has attacked comedians or TV presenters. Already during his first presidency he had repeatedly pointed his finger at Stephen Colbert, Saturday Night Live and CNN, accusing them of spreading 'fake news' and being tools of left-wing propaganda. These blows were often delivered through social media, which the tycoon uses to mobilise his base and put pressure on the media and broadcasters.

According to the American media, ABC's decision came after Nexstar Media Group, owner of many of the network's affiliates, announced that it would no longer broadcast the programme 'for the foreseeable future', judging the host's jokes offensive. Reinforcing the pressure was also the position of Brendan Carr, commissioner of the Federal Communications Commission close to the Republican area, who had ventilated possible consequences for the broadcaster.

ABC has spoken of 'indefinite pre-emption', without confirming whether it is a definitive cancellation. However, uncertainty about the programme's future remains, while controversy is growing over the role of the regulators and the risks of censorship in a sector - that of late night shows - already struggling with falling ratings and competition from digital platforms.
