Hamas is ready to hand over the government of the Gaza Strip to a transitional committee
The White House believes the terrorists are ready to hand over their weapons. Killed Palestinian suspect who had crossed the Yellow Line.
Key points
One of the leaders of Hamas, Bassem Naim, said today that the organisation is willing to hand over the administration of the Gaza Strip to the National Transitional Committee and facilitate its mission. This was reported by al Arabiya.
The White House believes that Hamas is ready to disarm as part of the second phase of the ceasefire agreement drawn up by US President Donald Trump. This was reported by two senior US officials in a press briefing, explaining that Hamas militiamen said they had accepted the demilitarisation plan proposed by Washington.
Renewal of Arms
This is an important development because, Axios emphasises, any hope of turning the Gaza truce into a lasting peace depends on Hamas renouncing arms and withdrawing Israeli troops. The US and other mediators have been in contact with Hamas in recent weeks to advance the steps towards disarmament. Further talks on the issue will take place in the coming weeks as the implementation of the second phase begins and the new Palestinian government takes office, US officials said. ''Hamas is sending positive signals'' on demilitarisation, ''they are weakened and have lost many of their men,'' a US official said on condition of anonymity, explaining that he understands how sceptical the Israelis are that Hamas will actually disarm.
Suspect killed
The IDF, the Israeli Defence Forces, announced today that troops from the 7th Armoured Brigade killed a suspect in the southern part of the Gaza Strip, after he had crossed over to the Israeli-controlled side of the Yellow Line and approached the soldiers in a manner that posed an 'immediate threat'.
The army did not specify what actions of the suspect led to his identification as a threat.
