Among the very first was US President Donald Trump: "Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who has just been named pope. It is an honour to realise that he is the first American pope. It is exciting and an honour for our country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It is a very significant moment,' Trump said.

.The President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella has sent Leo XIV "fervent wishes for a long and fruitful pontificate. May his mission bring dialogue, justice and peace".
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has sent the new Pope a letter that begins: "Holy Father, I offer you my personal congratulations and those of the Italian government for your election to the throne of Peter". In the letter, Meloni affirms that "the world is in desperate need" of peace, which "you, from the Blessing Loggia, have invoked several times, recalling the incessant and tireless action carried out by the late Pope Francis". The premier closed the letter by signing it 'with filial affection'. Pd secretary Elly Schlein emphasised that the new Pope spoke of peace and called for building bridges.
The wish of the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Lorenzo Fontana, is that that of 'Pope Leo XIV' will be 'a fruitful Magisterium. There is great joy for this historic moment, made even more profound by the choice of a missionary Pontiff who cultivated dialogue between peoples. .From Europe, among the first to congratulate the Spanish premier Pedro Sanchez. "Congratulations to the whole Catholic Church on the election of the new Pope Leo XIV. May his pontificate contribute to strengthening dialogue and the defence of human rights in a world in need of hope and unity'. Best wishes also come from the newly elected German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who emphasised that the new Pontiff offers "hope and guidance to millions of believers throughout the world in these difficult times". And the German president, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, also sent the new Pope Leo XIV his "heartfelt blessing" on behalf of Germany.
