Donald Trump made a surprise appearance in the halls of the Republican Convention in Milwaukee late in the evening. Right ear bandaged, where the bullet hit him, he sat next to JD Vance, whom he had recently chosen as his vice presidential candidate. He was also joined by his family and large donors to his campaign in a special section of the Fiserv Forum.
Trump arrived around 10pm local time, to the soundtrack of the song God Bless the USA. He smiled at the crowd who greeted him warmly. He raised his fist, clapped back, waved.
The former President and new White House aspirant was greeted by chants of USA, USA, and fight, fight, the latter, fight, the word he used while raising his fist in a gesture of defiance after being injured last Saturday in an assassination attempt.
Trump actually has a habit of appearing at the convention all four days. He had also done so in 2016, when he later won the presidency. His official speech, however, is expected in the arena on Thursday evening, to crown the event.
A few hours earlier, Trump had officially crossed the threshold of a majority of delegates in his favour for the formal nomination to the White House for the Republican Party. During the convention session, in addition to speeches, there was also the so-called roll call, where the delegations from the states speak one by one to account for the outcome of the primaries.
Trump's arrival in the hall concluded a first day devoted to speeches that portrayed the party as capable of appealing to wide swathes of voters: African-American and Hispanic speakers in evidence. As well as staunch Trump supporters such as Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene. The leader of the trucking union, Sean O'Brien, also spoke in an unprecedented gesture.
