Mourning for the death of Monsignor Cesare Nosiglia, who was Archbishop of Turin from 2010 to 2022 and Apostolic Administrator of Susa from 2019 to 2022. His death occurred tonight (27 August) at 2.15 a.m. at the Hospice Cottolengo in Chieri, where Nosiglia had been transferred a few days ago from the Gradenigo Hospital in Turin: he had been struck by a respiratory disease, which he had lived in secrecy due to his strong and determined desire. The funeral will be celebrated on Friday 29 at 3.30 p.m. by Cardinal Roberto Repole at Turin Cathedral.

Nosiglia was 80 years old. Born in Rossiglione, in the province of Genoa and diocese of Acqui Terme, and educated in the seminaries of Acqui Terme and Rivoli, Archbishop Emeritus of Turin Cesare Nosiglia had become a priest on 29 June 1968 and had continued his studies in Theology and Sacred Scripture at the Pontifical Lateran University and Biblical Institute in Rome. From 1971 to 1991 he was vice-director and then director of the National Catechetical Office of the Italian Episcopal Conference, and in September of that year he was consecrated bishop.

An auxiliary and then vice-gerent of the diocese of Rome, he was especially involved in the areas of youth, education and Catholic schools, and was also very attentive to the conditions of the marginalised, especially the homeless and nomads. Transferred to the diocese of Vicenza in 2003, he was then appointed archbishop of Turin in 2020. His strong sensitivity to social issues led him to take challenging public positions in the many crisis areas that characterise the affairs of Turin and Piedmont, often siding personally with the workers.

A 'street magisterium' accompanied by a strong focus on young people and the realities of the territory. His was the image of Turin 'two cities' and the pastoral letter 'Not foreigners but fellow citizens and family members of God'. Among his battles in the latter part of his time as archbishop were those over the Embraco and car crises. His commitment to the Shroud was also strong, with the promotion of the first ostension dedicated in a special way to the sick and suffering, during the Covid, an extraordinary ostension in the presence of the civil authorities of Turin and Piedmont, as a common moment of prayer. and, in 2015, the public ostension with the two-day visit of Pope Francis.
