The controversial 'Rwanda plan', conceived by the Tory governments as an avowed deterrent against illegal immigration, 'is dead and buried'. This was confirmed by the new Labour prime minister Keir Starmer in the first press conference following today's debut council of ministers, while reaffirming his commitment to counter 'illegal' landings by different means.

As for foreign policy, Starmer emphasised that since yesterday he had initiated contacts with various foreign leaders, starting with "Joe Biden and Volodymyr Zelensky" (and among the very first, Giorgia Meloni), insisting on his moderate approach of substantial continuity on the main international dossiers: first and foremost, support, including military support, for Kiev, which "will continue" as before. He then recalled that next week he will be in Washington for the NATO summit and indicated 'security and defence' as the government's 'first duty' in terms of international relations.
