Ukraine: shake-up at the top of the military – Zelenskyy removes Syrsky. Who is the new commander, Drapatyi?
The Ukrainian president has appointed a new chief of the armed forces following internal tensions and protests, whilst the war with Russia continues with attacks from both sides
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced the removal of Oleksandr Syrsky, Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, and the appointment of the Commander of the Joint Forces, Mykhajlo Drapatyi, to replace him. “I have decided that the new Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces will be Mykhailo Drapatyi. I am grateful to Oleksandr Syrsky and all our soldiers for holding Ukraine’s positions on the front line so firmly,” Zelensky said in a message on Telegram, following days of protests in Kyiv and other cities across the country calling for Syrsky’s removal.
Ten minutes earlier, the Ukrainian MP Oleksiy Goncharenko had broken the news on his Telegram profile.
Last week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy carried out a cabinet reshuffle, sacking, amongst others, Ukrainian Defence Minister Fedorov, whose resignation sparked protests across the country.
Fedorov himself had stated that his resignation was due to a long-standing conflict with Syrskyi; subsequently, the British newspaper *The Guardian* reported that the decision to remove Syrskyi had already been taken, but it was unclear who would replace him.
As head of the Joint Armed Forces, Drapatyi’s name was already being bandied about: Zelensky had met him on Monday amongst several potential successors to Syrsky, when it was already clear that, to resolve the crisis triggered by the removal of Mykhaylo Fedorov as Defence Minister, the President would also have to relieve Syrsky of his post, as Fedorov’s conflict with him had reached such a level that his ‘removal’ had become necessary.
