Kiev: ‘Orbán at the helm of the UN? He’d use vetoes and blackmail just as he does in the EU’
“I am certain that Viktor Orbán, as Secretary-General of the United Nations, would put to good use his masterful skills in vetoing and blackmail, which he has honed over years of boycotting key EU decisions.” This was written on X by the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha, regarding the possibility that the former Hungarian Prime Minister might be appointed to lead the UN, as reported by the Wall Street Journal. “We can share with the rest of the world our vast experience in getting him to have a coffee at just the right moment,” he added sarcastically. This was a reference to the incident in December 2023 when the decision to open EU enlargement negotiations with Kyiv at the European Council was reached thanks to a coffee break suggested to Orbán by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz: once he had stepped out, the Council gave its approval.
