Ukraine, Kiev: 10 civilian casualties from Russian attack on Kharkiv

The death toll in the Russian missile attack that hit a five-storey residential building in Kharkiv, Ukraine's second largest city, has risen to 10. This was reported by the mayor of the city, Ihor Terekhov. Among the victims were also three minors, it is specified. In Ukraine's second largest city, a Russian missile hit a five-storey residential building. President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack and called for an international response. He said Russia struck Ukraine overnight with 29 missiles and 480 drones, targeting energy facilities in Kiev and other central regions and causing damage in at least seven other locations in the country. According to preliminary data, air defence systems shot down 19 missiles and 453 drones, with 9 missiles and 26 attack drones hitting 22 locations.

In Kharkiv, north-east Ukraine, rescuers were sifting through the rubble looking for survivors. Among the victims were a primary school teacher and her son, a second grade student, who were killed in their home, and a second grade student, who also died with his mother, according to the mayor of the city, Ihor Terekhov.

The regional prosecutor's office stated that the building was hit by a new Russian cruise missile, known as the Izdeliye-30. According to Ukrainian sources, the new subsonic air-launched weapon, which Russia recently began using against Ukraine, has a range of 1,500 kilometres (930 miles) and is equipped with a new satellite navigation system that is more resistant to interference.

In the Kiev region, debris damage was reported in three districts, according to local authorities. In the southern Odessa region, 80 firefighters were called in to help put out extensive fires in infrastructure facilities following an attack by several drones. Ukrainian state railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia said that damage to the railway infrastructure forced the modification of several routes in the central-western part of the country.

In Moscow, the Russian Defence Ministry stated that the night attack targeted military factories, energy plants and Ukrainian air bases. But this is clearly not the case: the victims are civilians.
