Ukraine: Intense raids, Poland mobilises air defences. Zelensky: no worthy response to Putin from the West
Five dead and 10 wounded is the toll of the Russian attack launched in several regions with more than 50 missiles and around 500 drones
Poland scrambled its aircraft to ensure air safety after Russia launched attacks in the Ukrainian region of Lviv, near the Polish border. "Polish and allied aircraft are operating intensively in our airspace, while ground-based air defence and radar reconnaissance systems have reached the highest level of operational readiness," the Polish Armed Forces Operational Command said in a post on X where it spoke of actions "of a preventive nature" that "aim to protect airspace and citizens, especially in areas adjacent to the threatened region".
The latest heavy Russian raid that has hit the western part of Ukraine has also grazed a convoy on which 110 Italian activists are on board returning from their tenth mission in the country of the Mean, European Nonviolent Action Movement, returning from Kharkiv. Thirty-five associations are taking part in the mission, including Azione Cattolica, Anci, MoVI, Masci, Agesci, Base Italia, Fondazione Gariwo, Piccoli Comuni del Welcome, Reti della Carità, Progetto Sud. Ukrainska Pravda, quoting the regional emergency service, writes that in the attacks in Lviv four people died and at least four others were injured. Numerous buildings were damaged, including residential ones
Following the Russian attack, part of the city of Lviv was left without electricity. "A part of Lviv is without power. We are aware of outages in Riasne and Levandivka. We are clarifying the details," Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi wrote on Telegram, urging residents to stay in safe places.
But new waves of drone attacks were also launched overnight by Russian forces elsewhere in Ukraine, where air raid sirens went off in several regions. This was announced this morning by the Ukrainian defence forces. Zaporizhzhya was hit by a combined drone and air attack, regional military administrator Ivan Fedorov said on Telegram. There is reportedly one dead and 10 wounded. At least 10 drones and guided bombs hit the city, killing one person and wounding at least nine others, he added. The supply of water and electricity was disrupted in several districts.
Other cities, including Kiev, Dnipro and Odessa, also reported drone attacks. The Air Defence Forces said that waves of unmanned aircraft had already been targeted by the defence in eastern Ukraine, with explosions echoing throughout the night in many areas. According to the air force, 73 drones were shot down. Ukrainian forces also raised the alarm over potential attacks with Russian cruise missiles.
