Ukraine: the sixth winter of the war is approaching
Ukraine is bracing itself for another winter of war whilst tensions flare up on the diplomatic front. Trump accuses Zelensky of obstructing peace, Kyiv complains of a shortage of Patriot systems to defend against Russian ballistic missiles, and Putin is preparing for possible talks with the US and China – without Ukraine or Europe. In the midst of it all is the Pope, who is attempting to open a path to negotiations by telephoning the Kremlin personally. And then there are those living through the war, on the front line or not far away. We discuss this with Gigi Donelli, a journalist with Radio 24 who has just returned from the region.

The Russian Embassy on the protests: ‘Now Moscow is blamed for every problem in Italia’
The “hand of Moscow” has become “an all-Italia catch-all for any awkward issue”. This is the Russian Embassy’s response to the allegations regarding the street violence in Milan. “Young people are discontented, prices are rising, riots are breaking out in the streets, lorries aren’t running? – writes the embassy on its Telegram channel – What could be easier than blaming it all on Russian hackers, Russian agents or anyone with a Russian passport who, for some strange reason, keeps visiting Italia?”

Zakharova: ‘Meloni should listen to Al Bano, who is calling for the doors to Moscow to be reopened’
Giorgia Meloni should listen to Al Bano, who is calling for Italia to reopen its doors to Russia. This was stated on Telegram by Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, who posted an interview the singer gave to Sandro Teti Editore and which was published on YouTube on 21 October. “The famous and popular Italian singer Al Bano, who is very well known and loved in our country,” says Zakharova, “has made a very sincere and heartfelt public appeal to the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni. Emphasising the deep historical and cultural ties between our countries, he urged the Prime Minister, with great emotion, to stop imposing sanctions on Russia, to reopen Italy’s doors to Russia and to finally begin working in earnest to achieve a lasting peace in Ukraine. But will his voice be heard in Rome?” “Judging by recent events, the Italian authorities seem to be having serious difficulty in accommodating voices that diverge from the prevailing political narrative,” Zakharova’s post continues. “Young Italians are protesting: a Russian connection is being sought. Italian citizens are voicing their discontent: foreign influence is suspected,” she observes further, ironically wondering whether “the next target of the Italian secret services’ investigations will be Al Bano”. Addressing the Prime Minister, Al Bano had stated in his interview that Russia is a country “that loves us” and that “has a lot of Italian spirit”, asking: “Why impose sanctions on Russia? Let’s give shares to Russia, let’s give flowers to Russia. Let’s put an end to this damned war’. And he added: ‘Dear Giorgia, I love you. I’d love you even more if we opened our doors to Russia. I am a man of peace’.

The devastation wrought by wars on the environment

There are periods of peace, which are favourable to trade, and there are times of a ‘war economy’ where defence contractors and everything related to reconstruction take the lion’s share. Danilo Zagaria discusses this in his book *Guerra alla Terra* (Add ed., €18), whilst reviewing some of the most significant conflicts in history; the biologist and science communicator poses a question: what is the environmental cost of war?

Rubio: ‘The war is actually about the Donbass’
Russia’s war against Ukraine “is actually about the Donbass”. This was stated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in comments to the press reported by Radio Liberty. “Whilst people continue to talk about a war in Ukraine, this war is about the Donbass. It concerns a region of the country. Essentially, it concerns 11 per cent of a part of that country that Russia wants to conquer, but which it is unable to take by military means, and which Ukraine is not prepared to cede”, he explained. “And there are valid reasons why it does not want to do so: sovereignty and its own long-term security,” he added. Rubio emphasised that the conflict cannot be resolved militarily and can only be brought to an end through diplomacy. The question, he said, is whether “it is possible to find a compromise, whereby both sides will have to make certain concessions in order to bring the war to an end”. “However complicated it may be, it is impossible to achieve this unless both sides are sitting at the table talking. And we are happy to play a mediating role in this regard. That is precisely what we are trying to do. We do not claim that simply putting them in the same room will solve the problem, but we have no chance of resolving it if we cannot get them to sit at the same table,” he emphasised.

During the night of 23–24 October, Ukrainian defence forces struck the Togliattikauchuk plant in Russia, the Proton-Electrotex company – a manufacturer of missile components – and an aircraft at Yeisk Airport. This was announced by the General Staff, as reported by Ukrainska Pravda. According to the General Staff, the company produces, in particular, components for the S-71 ‘Kover’ cruise missiles and the Iskander-M ballistic missiles, and is involved in the production of the Pantsir-S1 anti-aircraft missile system. The General Staff noted that the plant produces synthetic rubber and other products used, in particular, in the manufacture of solid rocket propellant.
