The death toll currently stands at at least 16 dead and 40 injured following last night’s massive Russian attack on Kyiv. The mayor of the Ukrainian capital, Vitaliy Klitschko, has updated the figures on Telegram. President Zelensky has also released the dramatic figures. The mayor has declared a day of mourning for tomorrow.
The attack, which began after midnight local time – and therefore after 11.00 pm on Wednesday 19 August in Italia – caused explosions, fires, damage to buildings and power cuts in various parts of the city.
A journalist from Reuters in the capital heard more than a dozen explosions. Rescue operations continued for hours, with people trapped inside a residential building and fire crews working to extinguish fires in various parts of the city.
The damage affected homes, non-residential buildings and warehouses. A paediatric hospital was also hit, whilst local authorities reported damage to a school. In some areas, the attack also disrupted the electricity supply.
The situation is particularly serious in the district of Solomiansky, where residential buildings and other structures have been damaged and where rescue workers have been searching for people amongst the rubble.In the Sviatoshynsky district, fires broke out in warehouse buildings and damage to a residential building was reported. The attack was not confined to the city. At least one other person died in the Kyiv region, according to local authorities quoted by Reuters. In the Brovary area, an industrial facility was also hit.
