War in Ukraine, Zelensky: ready for negotiations in Azerbaijan
Cross attacks with several civilian casualties and drone fragments end up on the territory of Romania, which officially protests against Russia: 'Irresponsible actions
On a visit to Azerbaijan, the president, Volodymyr Zelensky, says he is ready to negotiate with Moscow. In the meantime, however, Russian armed forces mainly targeted the Ukrainian city of Dnipro, where they killed at least five people and wounded 46, according to local authorities yesterday. Raids also hit Odessa, killing two.
On the opposite side, a woman was killed and a man seriously injured in a Ukrainian drone attack in the Russian border region of Belgorod, again according to local officials.
Romania recovered fragments from two drones in the city of Galati and the neighbouring county of Tulcea. There were no casualties. The Foreign Ministry said it had summoned the Russian ambassador in protest. At the same time, the defence ministry condemned Moscow's "irresponsible actions" and stressed "that these represent a new challenge to regional security and stability in the Black Sea area", a statement read. "Such incidents demonstrate the Russian Federation's disregard for the norms of international law and endanger not only the security of Romanian citizens, but also the collective security of NATO."
Romania, a member of both NATO and the European Union, shares a 650 km land border with Ukraine and has seen Russian drones repeatedly violate its airspace, while Moscow attacks Ukrainian ports across the Danube River.
Two Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets, part of a British mission in Romania, were sent on a mission to monitor the attack from the air, as per standard procedure. Defence Minister Radu Miruta said that a US-made anti-drone system, based on artificial intelligence, would soon be integrated into national air defence systems. Poland is already using the same system.
