UN: Paris criticises the US; US delegation walks out of Security Council meeting
The French mission to the United Nations: ‘The United States used to be a model when it came to human rights. That is no longer the case. Today, it finds itself alongside North Korea, Nicaragua, Mali and Russia’
The United States walked out of a UN Security Council meeting in protest whilst the French ambassador was speaking. The French diplomat had compared the United States to North Korea and Russia during a vote on human rights.
‘One member of this Council feigns moral indignation and seeks to lecture everyone on every subject, whether it be the conflict we are still discussing today’ – Ukraine – or ‘matters unrelated to peace and security, such as human rights. That is why we walked out of the chamber during France’s statement,” said Dan Negrea, the US Deputy Ambassador.
The US was one of ten countries to vote on Friday at the General Assembly against the renewal of the mandate of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, joining nations such as North Korea, Russia, Nicaragua and Mali. “The United States used to be a model when it came to human rights. That is no longer the case. Today, it finds itself alongside North Korea, Nicaragua, Mali and Russia. Isolated. And the world is no longer listening,” commented the French Mission to the United Nations in Geneva in a message published in English on X.
