Under-6s, the risk of poverty is growing in Italy: 27.7%.

The risk of poverty or social exclusion for minors in Italy in 2024 is stable at 27.1 per cent, but increases for children under six years of age from 25.9 per cent to 27.7 per cent. This emerges from Eurostat's tables on poverty and social exclusion according to which the average in Europe for children living in a household with an income below 60 per cent of the median income, or in a situation of material deprivation or low employment intensity is 24.2 per cent, slightly down from 24.8 per cent in 2023. Between the ages of 6 and 11 the risk drops from 26.4% to 25.9% For the over 60s the risk is slightly increasing to 20.6%.

According to the European Statistical Office, there will be 19.5 million children at risk of poverty or social exclusion in the EU in 2024. This figure represents 24.2 per cent of children under the age of 18, down 0.6 percentage points from 2023 (24.8 per cent).

At national level, in 2024, the highest values were recorded in Bulgaria (35.1%), Spain (34.6%) and Romania (33.8%). In contrast, Slovenia (11.8%), Cyprus (14.8%) and the Czech Republic (15.4%) recorded the lowest shares. Compared to 2023, Romania recorded the largest decrease in the share of children at risk of poverty or social exclusion in 2024, -5.2%, followed by Ireland (-3.7%) and Hungary (-3.3%). On the other hand, Finland (+3.5%), Croatia (+2.0%), Bulgaria and Belgium (both +1.2%) recorded the largest increases.
