Unibg and the tax authorities renew their partnership: the tax code can now be applied for directly at the university

The University of Bergamo and the Italian Revenue Agency – Bergamo Provincial Office are strengthening their collaboration for the benefit of the international university community. The new Memorandum of Understanding, signed today by the Rector of the University of Bergamo, Prof. Sergio Cavalieri, and the Provincial Director of the Bergamo Revenue Agency, Dr Antonino Giuseppe Graci, builds on a fruitful collaboration that began several years ago and introduces an important new development: the regular presence of Revenue Agency officials directly on the University’s premises.

During the periods of the year when there is a particularly high influx of international students, a service dedicated to issuing tax registration numbers will be launched on a trial basis at the university’s premises in Via Calvi. The helpdesk will be open, by appointment, two days a week in September and February and, if necessary, one day a week in October. The service is aimed at international students and incoming exchange students – under the Erasmus+ programme and similar schemes – who were unable to apply for a tax code through diplomatic or consular authorities before arriving in Italia.

The prompt allocation of a tax code is an essential step for accessing numerous services and fulfilling various obligations: from vehicle registration to applying for a residence permit, from opening a bank account to signing a tenancy agreement, right through to the payment of scholarships and remuneration. Thanks to the new organisational arrangements, students will be able to complete this procedure directly at the University, with the support of University staff and officials from the Italian Revenue Agency, thereby reducing the need to travel, simplifying administrative procedures and shortening the time required to become fully integrated into university and city life.

“With this agreement, we are further strengthening our commitment to international students and to all those coming from abroad who choose the University of Bergamo for their studies, research or work,” said the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sergio Cavalieri. Bringing a public service directly onto the university campus means removing administrative hurdles and supporting people right from the very first days of their stay in Bergamo. We would like to thank the Provincial Directorate of the Revenue Agency for its willingness to cooperate and for a partnership which, over the years, has proved invaluable and effective.”

The Protocol also sets out the procedures for assisting researchers, lecturers and technical and administrative staff arriving from abroad. For those arriving at other times of the year, it will still be possible to book an appointment at the local offices of the Revenue Agency. The activities provided for under the agreement will be carried out free of charge. The Protocol will run for two years and will be jointly monitored by the University and the provincial office of the Revenue Agency.
