With the start of the new academic year, the issue of accommodation returns for students away from home. And while the studio apartment remains a favourite solution for those seeking independence and concentration, prices are not always affordable.
According to Casa.it's analysis - which analysed the prices of studio apartments for rent in September 2025 in the 20 university cities whose universities in the 2023/2024 academic year had the highest number of enrolled students who obtained their secondary school diploma in a province other than that of the university's seat - the most expensive university city in Italy to rent a studio apartment is Venice, where the average rent reached 1,404 euro per month. It is followed by Florence (1,107 euros) and Milan (1,064 euros), which complete the podium of the most expensive cities.
Just below are Rome (EUR 1,018) and Genoa (EUR 972), which close the top five.
Other cities with more demanding rents include Bologna, with an average rent for a studio apartment of 961 euro, Padua (893 euro), Pisa (857 euro), Verona (723 euro) and Bari (697 euro) in the top ten.
More affordable are studio apartments in Naples (689 euro), Cagliari (684 euro), Parma (616 euro), Turin (592 euro) and Palermo (574 euro). Below EUR 600 are still Pavia (EUR 555), Catania (EUR 470), Perugia (EUR 469) and Ferrara (EUR 468), while the cheapest university city is Messina, where the average rent is just EUR 376 per month.
