Urban routes to discover 85 cities in Italy on foot
Like every year on 31 October, the National Urban Trekking Day returns, an invitation to discover many towns and cities in a slow way
Key points
Walking as a collective rite, to rediscover the slow rhythm of moving on foot and admire all the beauty that makes Italy unique. 31 October sees the return of the National Day of Urban Trekking, an initiative conceived by the Municipality of Siena since 2003, which will involve eighty-five Italian cities through urban treks that will take place simultaneously. From north to south, a shared experience of sustainable and healthy movement that promotes the culture and history of our territories. Walking becomes a collective rite, an invitation to rediscover the heritage of one's own territory at a slow pace, rediscovering a sense of community and experiencing sustainable tourism. An experience that also praises sport because urban trekking is an activity that brings wellbeing to whoever practices it. A slow but steady pace to discover the beauty of Italy.
Dedicated to the Jubilee the 2025 edition
Siena as project leader
The project leader is Siena, the city where urban trekking was born in 2003; the itinerary designed for this year is '1300-2025 Jubilee and Walks: places, pilgrims and spirituality over the centuries' and will guide participants from the Campo to the Duomo and Santa Maria della Scala, symbols of hospitality and spirituality along the Via Francigena. In addition, urban trekking in Siena will continue throughout the month of November: thematic itineraries and free guided tours will be organised every weekend for guests of accommodation facilities.
Urban trekking from Aosta to Ascoli Piceno amid nature, culture and faith
Among the itineraries that can be followed, there are also proposals designed to immerse oneself in nature: such as in Aosta, where one can discover the archaeology and landscape of the city through an itinerary that combines Roman remains and Alpine nature; in Ancona, participants will walk in the Cardeto Park, amidst views overlooking the Adriatic Sea and historical ruins; in Sardinia, in Tempio Pausania, the trek will wind through granite streets and jubilee paths, immersed in the landscapes of Gallura.
Walking to rediscover memory and identity is the leitmotif of itineraries such as those in Leonforte, Sicily, which links trekking to the Baroque and monumental fountains, or in Pitigliano, the 'little Jerusalem', with a walk that recounts centuries of coexistence between different communities. In Pavia, the itinerary evokes the link with the Via Francigena, recounting the cultural and spiritual exchanges that have made the city a European crossroads; while in San Giovanni in Fiore, Calabria, one will walk in the footsteps of Gioacchino da Fiore, the visionary medieval abbot who marked the history of European thought.
