Urbano Cairo: for La7 'best year ever' and first profit (of 100,000 euros)

Cairo Communication's network programme schedules presented. Which returns to rule out any involvement in politics. And on Rai: 'La7 does a lot of public service, but has no advertising'.

'For La7 it was the best year ever'. Urbano Cairo looks back on the past year and on 2024 as the turning point years for the television broadcaster acquired 11 years ago from Telecom Italia Media La7. "The year 2023 closed for La7 with a very small profit of €100,000, the best one ever achieved in my business, a fantastic turnaround and I am very happy about it. Advertising also did well, which should have posted 'a growth of 3.5 per cent' in the first half of the year (the final figure will be announced with the half-yearly report). If we then broaden the spectrum to include the subsidiary RCS, 'the first half of the year went well; particularly positive was the trend in social media with +53%, and online was good, with newspapers and magazines in line with last year'.

The setting for the presentation of La7's programming for the new season has - after many years - changed. No longer the Four Seasons, but the Hotel Principe di Savoia. What hasn't changed is the formula: a quick description of the season's novelties and then questions, across the board, on present (publishing and Turin football) and future activities.

Cairo: 'No to my involvement in politics'

Or rather, better said in this case, futuristic, with the president of Cairo Communication, who demurs when asked about his possible future entry into politics to create a new 'centre'. But then he dryly replies that no, that descent into the field will not take place: 'Either you do one thing or another, I like being an entrepreneur, we have an articulated group with 4,500 employees, how can I think about politics? One would have to say 'I stop being an entrepreneur and do politics'. It's impossible'.

Nor is he able to extract a structured comment on the 'common sense left' cleared by the interview with 'his' Corriere della Sera (which he publishes with his subsidiary Rcs) by Marina Berlusconi. She thinks about it and rethinks, changes expression several times, snorts, but then the answer is 'lateral': 'Compared to what is happening in other countries in Europe, today we have a value, which is stability, which is important. Stability can also allow Giorgia Meloni and the government to do those things that are useful for the country to embark on a path of growth'. Sic.

Criticism from the government? "In 11 years complaints from everyone"

.

Of course, there is also to be noted, on the La7-Government axis, the criticism that has come from the Executive and the Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of certain programmes such as Piazza Pulita. 'I have been publisher of La7 for 11 years,' Cairo replied, 'and I have always left maximum freedom to journalists and presenters because it is my way of publishing. In recent years I have had complaints from all governments. All those who have governed from 2013 to today have complained privately or publicly'.

Preserale with Insinna and the story with Barbero

Returning to La7, the season presents two novelties in particular and one piece of news that is expected but not taken for granted. First novelty: Cairo Communication's TV for its preserale bets on the arrival of Flavio Insinna. No exclusive contract ("as in RAI", explain both Urbano Cairo and network director Andrea Salerno), but a commitment from Monday to Saturday before the news, from 7 October, along the lines of the US format "Family Feud", considered among the best game shows ever. Title to be found.

In addition to this, the historian Alessandro Barbero will return in the coming season with the new format 'Barbero risponde' (Barbero answers), in late evening with 26 half-hour episodes, not live.

Mentana, renewal with La7 until 2026

Finally, the expected but not expected news: Enrico Mentana will remain at the helm of the La7 news until 2026. "Did I fear that Mentana might go to Discovery? Mentana is great, you have understood how much I esteem and appreciate him. I have an excellent personal relationship with him, we have known each other for a long time. Throughout this period we have spoken to each other, I made him understand how much I wanted him to stay with us. He was also happy to stay with us. I am happy that he is with us for another two years and hopefully even longer'.

June, collection in double figures

Against this backdrop, Urbano Cairo looks to the coming season with optimism and on the back of advertising sales with a 'two-month period May-June that saw significant growth. The increase was 7% on average, with double-digit growth in June'. Admittedly, the first four months went at a slower pace than the other broadcasters: +1.3% the growth in sales according to Nielsen data compared to Rai's +6.1% or Mediaset's 4.7% or Sky's +6.4% and even Discovery's +20%. For the second half of the year the forecasts are better, explained Cairo Communication's number one, but in the meantime, "a 14-stage roadshow that we have had with investors in this period" has also intervened to bring water to the mill.

More commercials and less licence fee in Rai? "Confusing idea"

Speaking of advertising, one's thoughts inevitably turned to the controversy of the moment, with the Lega Lega's bill - against which Forza Italia has already raised a defensive wall for an all internal majority dispute - to allow RAI to raise by one point the advertising investment ceiling to which it is obliged under the Tusma (the Testo Unico dei Servizi Media Audiovisivi). The counterbalance would be a reduction in the licence fee. But also an extra thorn for Mediaset evidently.

'It seems a bit confusing to me,' Cairo replied, 'and I don't understand what the final project would be'. La7 'for the moment has much fewer resources than the others, but it manages to stay on the market with a lot of effort for the type of programming it has. We would also deserve to have a share of the licence fee'. According to Cairo, 'it would be necessary to completely rethink' the general reorganisation: 'You cannot have a network with a licence fee and advertising, someone who does a lot of public service and has nothing but advertising'.
