US: jobless claims down by 4,000 to 226,000; estimates at 225,000
In the United States, the number of workers claiming unemployment benefits for the first time fell by 4,000 in the week ending 13 June, to 226,000 (seasonally adjusted), according to the Department of Labour. The figure was expected to be 225,000. The figure for the previous week was revised upwards from 229,000 to 230,000. The total number of workers receiving unemployment benefits – for the week ending 6 June, the most recent week for which data is available – rose by 24,000 to 1,810,000.
