US: jobless claims up by 9,000 to 209,000; estimates at 202,000

(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - In the United States, the number of workers claiming unemployment benefits for the first time rose by 9,000 in the week ending 8 August to 209,000 (seasonally adjusted), according to the Department of Labour. The figure was expected to be 202,000. The figure for the previous week was revised upwards from 199,000 to 200,000. The total number of workers receiving unemployment benefits – for the week ending 1 August, the most recent for which data is available – fell by 22,000 to 1,777,000.
