Federal immigration authorities, along with agents from the FBI and Georgia state police, raided a Hyundai electric vehicle manufacturing plant on Thursday evening, arresting more than 450 'illegal immigrants', according to law enforcement officials engaged in a crackdown on illegals on US soil.
The Hyundai plant, which started producing electric vehicles last year, employs around 1,200 people.
South Korea's foreign ministry spokesperson expressed 'concern and regret' over the raids that targeted the company, explaining that 'the economic activities of our companies investing in the United States and the rights and interests of our citizens should not be unfairly violated'.
Seoul protests
US authorities explained that the raid and arrests were part of an investigation into undocumented individuals, according to local media reports. "The economic activities of our companies investing in the United States and the rights and interests of our citizens must not be unfairly violated," ministry spokesman Lee Jae-woong said in a media briefing. "We expressed our concern and regret today through the US Embassy Seoul," Lee added.
Seoul sent officials from its embassy and consulate in Washington and Atlanta to the site, and instructed the local diplomatic missions to set up a task force to deal with and follow up on the emerging issues, the ministry continued.
