A federal appeals court blocked a judge's earlier order requiring Florida and the federal government to close and dismantle the controversial detention centre for illegal immigrants set up in the Everglades, known as Alligator Alcatraz.
The Eleventh Circuit of the US Court of Appeals granted the requests of the State of Florida and the Department of Homeland Security to stay a district court's preliminary injunction that would have forced the site to shut down operations within 60 days.
A preliminary injunction is a temporary order issued until a court can make a final decision on a case.
"After careful consideration, we grant the defendants' petitions and stay the preliminary injunction and the case itself pending appeal," the three appellate judges ruled in the order.
